Can anyone suggest good software to remove spyware from an XP? I believe its a trojan that has infected the computer because 4 new icons popped up that i didn't put on there. They are called things like spyware remover etc. Every few minutes a thing pops up. Like your computer is vulnerable to viruses as your computer has sensed virus activities. And a webpage pops up every few minutes also. I ran norton antivirus but it didn't find anything. Also i downloaded Spyware doctor. It found many cookies and one trojan downloader, which i fixed. But the virus trojan thing, spyware is still on there. Also the computer runs very slow. Can anyone help me! I will be forever thankfull. P.S Could the software preferably be free but if it will fix my computer i don't care if i have to pay for it.

Besides the two online scans suggested by JibbarJabbar, another good free online scan which removes what it finds is the Eset Online Scanner. It has the same scanning engine as the famous NOD32 antivirus.

Firstly, Do NOT download and install any more anti-virus programs unless you completely un-install any current anti-virus program that you may have.

The use of 2 anti-virus programs at the same time can cause major conflicts. The 2 scanning engines will fight each other to scan every file that you read, write or execute which can cause a slowdown. For the same reason, using 2 A-Vs can cause you to have less protection from the various malware, not more.

(Using an anti-spyware with an anti-virus is good, however and is recommended)

A much better solution, right now when your computer is apparently infected, is the use of on-line scanners.

Run both of these on-line scans. Both are free and excellent at detecting and removing malware free of charge. There is no need to un-install any of your current protections (if you have any) before using these.

1. Scan for virus, worms, dialers, etc. and remove (free online scan, no downloaded program) with BitDefender's Online Scanner. Press "Scan now" on the left.

http://www.bitdefender.com/

2. Scan for trojans, adware, cookies, and spyware and remove (free online scan, no downloaded program) with Ewido Online Scanner ( now known as AVG Anti-Spyware). This is NOT the same as AVG Anti-Virus. Press "Scan your computer now online and clean it for free!" on the left.

http://www.ewido.net/en/

These scans will take quite a bit of time. The time is necessary to clean-up an infected computer.

Someone has suggested that you use SmitfraudFix. Don't bother! SmitFraudFix is a specialised removal tool that removes exactly 1 (one) type of infection. It will do nothing to remove the other roughly 999,999 types of computer infection.....As they say, "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing".

Good luck.

it is not free but might as well be free its only 20$ a year after mail in rebate just dont get the companion cd for crashes that's an extra 10$ make sure you uncheck that box or you'll have to call them on the phone. anyhow i would turn off system restore first to purge that clean as that is where part of your trojan is located then download stopzilla at stopzilla.com trust me it will work wonders not only does it scan your files but also your registry and restore points as well. good luck oh yeah once it finds the problem and blocks it then it is up to you to purchase it. it is worth every penny. i dont even send in the rebate thats how good it is Norton or mcaffee dont even compare to this or any of those junk ones like AVG oh yeah and dont forget to turn system restore back on you dont really have to turn system restore off because it scans that as well but i noticed if you have a bunch of infected or corrupted restore points it takes longer to scan.

unfortunetly, free antivirus/spyware are unreliable... there are a few antivirus/spyware that can't remove every virus and spyware... sometimes those free antivirus have spywares themselves... i recommend norton antivirus or MacAfee.

*you can get norton antivirus for free if you have rogers internet

*other people have mentioned AVG. it does somewhat help but it hasn't help me protect against harmful viruses (viruses from msn messenger) (it was unable to detect the virus even though i scanned the file)

I had the problem too and Spyware doctor did Sh(CENSORED!!!!!) to help. Neither did Norton. I had a terrbile lagg everytime i tried to do something.

Eventually, i got all my files on a flash drive and reinstalled windows, deleting everything else. After, the PC ran like new. I'm not saying you should do this, but i'm just saying you should use it as a last resort if everythign else fails.
