Ok so yesterday I started hearing things on my computer with no programs running, choppy radio style ads, celebrity gossip, and for whatever reason bugs bunny sayin what an ingnoramus. Now my internet is going down in graphic quality and my entire computer is getting slower. Norton says everythings fine, so I don't know what to do at this point. I've deleted recently installed programs and tried loading a back up but it didn't work

Well seem like you have both software and hardware problem

those choppy sound is from the HD, it is a sign that it is failing

and the sudden slowness is related to virus

better get an antivirus program and a new HD

Try this:

Firstly, boot your computer to the Safe Mode menu screen. You do this by repeatedly pressing F8 as soon as you boot up. Once there, use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode with Networking. Continue to boot from there, by pressing Enter. You will now see some drivers being loaded. There will be a pause at some point. This usually lasts for no more than 30 seconds.

Now open your browser and download TDSSKiller.exe from Kaspersky Lab. It's tiny, and takes just a minute to run. It hunts down and kills a specific family of rootkits.

Regardless of the results, download and run Dr. Web CureIt! (still in Safe Mode):

You should now delete TDSSKiller.exe and Dr. Web CureIt!, as updated versions are often made available.

Hope this helps.

If you have windows 7 then you can restore it but you said you tried that so try pressing F8 and there is one option where you can start your computer as good as new. It will basically delete everything in the coumputer. i have toshiba so i am not sure if you actually have those options in ur computer if it is different but try it. Also there is a restore point where you can go back to the past date when you had the update. also stop going to websites that gives you virus lol

Download Microsoft Security Essentials. It is kept updated by the Microsoft Malware Detection Center and monitors all downloaded and running files. It has alerted me to numerous viruses.

ok run this program its not REALLY an antivirus but it bypasses windows and isn't compatible wiht ANY windows viruses or mac viruses its just its own system and you can use it to back up your data if anything its called Wubi http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/windows-installer and for this i will let you run the light version well i guess you can choose the heavy version if you want but well i guess if you like it idk i'll tell you what i mean but first open the program and select 7 or more for the install size

ok so where is says DESKTOP in the box Kubuntu uses KDE and requires about 1gb ram to rum smooth -- then reg Ubuntu --- THIS version is why i want you to try other version --- it has a **BAD** interface -- just look it up on google images ---

then there is Xubuntu using XFCE which is a tad bit lighter and will run with 384mb ram i think and then Lubuntu which is REALLY light but it doesn't have a very well laid out settings area and its a tad bit confusing to change the theme but its really light and can run on 256mb or maybe even less

once you have made your choice put in a pass word and hit install

then wait for it to download just go do something else... wait well idk you may wanna run this program in safe mode w/ networking because of the virus / or whatever it is so it (hopefully) won't spread

but once it downloads and all that just reboot and choose Kubuntu or whichever one you picked and wait for it to install now then when you reboot into it again you can use it

ok BIG STUFF to backup your data because i mean you can run all the dang anti malware programs in the world but idk its up to you if you want to reformat your computer i don't think you do but um hopefully you can get this virus removed but if you can't just follow these instructions

OK go to ... just open a folder in Kubuntu or whatever you picked and look to the LEFT SIDE of that window --- you should see your harddrive on the left side just click on it --- it will say like 40gb hard drive or something and you can browse the windows directories

if unfamiliar w/ the layout --- to get to your windows user folder go to Users when you are in your windows drive for vista/ 7 and documents and settings for XP and ealier then just copy all that to a flash drive because if you format all this will be deleted

EDIT:

Mitch, completely disregard all the gibberish that Timbuck put in his/her answer.

Yes, it's true that you can access, copy and delete Windows system files in Ubuntu, but you don't want that, you just want to remove the virus infection without deleting any Windows system files.

Read bellow for the best and safest way to do that.

First of all, Norton sucks. Together with McAfee they are the worst protection you can have. get rid of Norton as soon as you can.

For now, do this to get rid of whatever bug screws with your computer as well as your nerves:

For a proper scan and removal of any virus, worm, trojan and any other malware, the best way is to use a System Rescue CD, like BitDefender or Kaspersky. Those are both bootable CDs, that run scans in a safe Linux environment, not corrupted by anything.

Go to a different, healthy, non-infected PC or laptop and download both the BitDefender and the Kaspersky Anti-virus Recovery CDs (free downloads).

Download links for both:

http://download.bitdefender.com/rescue_cd/

http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/rescuedisk

Burn both downloaded ISO files to CD with an ISO burner software. If you do not have an iso burning software installed, I recommend getting the CDBurnerXP (free software) from here:

http://cdburnerxp.se/

Or just use this little utility to write the .ISO to a CD:

http://www.hiren.info/download/freeware-tools/BurnCDCC.zip

Just download, unzip and run the BURNCDCC.EXE, no installation is necessary.

Once you burned the recovery CDs, return to the infected computer and put the BitDefender Anti-virus Recovery CD in your CD/DVD drive and boot from CD (set your boot up options in BIOS to CD boot as first option if it does not boot from CD at first)

After your infected computer boots into the Recovery CD Linux environment, first update the virus definition database from the Internet server, than perform a complete scan of your desktop computer or laptop (all hard drives and/or partitions). Remove (delete) any infections found, and shut down your desktop computer or laptop.

Remove the BitDefender Anti-virus Recovery CD and insert the Kaspersky Anti-virus Recovery CD.

Repeat the same procedure as for BitDefender above.

After scanning with those 2 Anti-virus Recovery CDs, your system should be virus free, and will function properly again.

For the future:

Best pay antivirus programs are BitDefender or ESET Nod32.

The best free antivirus programs are Avast Free and Avira AntiVir Free.

http://www.avira.com/en/free-download-avira-free-antivirus/x-origin/web

Install 2 antivirus programs, one to run at all times as live, active protection scanner, and another just for on demand scans when you have doubts about any file.

You will need to disable the secondary antivirus from start up menu via 'msconfig' command, as only one live protection antivirus at a time can run in a Windows system. The secondary antivirus is only to be used for on demand scan of files, as a back up and confirm solution for any dubious files.

Also install MalwareBytes, at least the free version (offers added protection against malware, spyware, adware and rootkits, also against some viruses and Trojans).

Microsoft Windows Firewall sucks.

You will also need a good Firewall to protect your system from attacks.

Install Zone Alarm or Comodo Firewall (both are free). Zone Alarm is by far the best firewall.

http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/trialpay-za-signup.htm

Install CCleaner to clean your registry keys and other unwanted stuff.

http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/standard

For your web browser, use either Firefox Mozilla, Google Chrome or Opera.

DO NOT USE INTERNET EXPLORER (IE), as it is the worst browser, and it can be easily attacked, infected and corrupted.

Also install the WOT (Web of Trust) addon tool to all your browsers. It rates all websites, blocks access and also alerts you when you open an unsafe website, thus preventing any internet attack or virus infection.

http://www.mywot.com/

For media players:

Use either WinAmp, Songbird or Media Jukebox for audio files. DO NOT use iTunes, that Apple (Mac) crap sucks even more than any Microsoft crap.

Use either VLC Media Player or GOM Player for video files and DVD. Both of them would play anything without the need of any codecs, even damaged and incomplete video files.

Other options would be (in this order) Daum PotPlayer, KMPlayer, Kantaris Media Player, SPlayer, SMPlayer, and MPlayer. All are free to download and use.

Good luck.
