If I was looking for free a-v software, I'd be more inclined to choose Avast! http://www.avast.com - It offers more protection than other free a-v software available. AVG Free for example, does not offer any rootkit protection or a web shield. To confirm this, check out the AVG website: http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition
If I chose free a-v software, I'd also be looking for a good firewall. A good, reputable, easy-to-use firewall is OnlineArmor. http://www.tallemu.com/ - Both the free and full version scored very well on http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php
On the other hand, free software isn't as good as some of the 'purchasable' software available. I'd be looking at unbiased test results from sources such as http://av-comparatives.org/ to make my choice. Have a look at not only which a-v software has been scoring well lately, but also take into consideration which names have been scoring well repeatedly in the past.

I personally from my own experience suggest symantec's norton anti virus 2009.It is The Best In Internet Security And System Security Mangement-it is easy to understand and use.It even detects the minutest virus. As you said u have at least 160 gb hard drive at least,it is not to big just 800 mb.

I have used AVAST Vista Home Premium and Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. It always worked fine without any conflicts.

Try ESET Smart Security (www.eset.com) It's not free, but it's about the best protection you can get. It has an antivirus plus a firewall and more. Hope this helps.

i would strongly suggest Avira Antivir. It was able to sniff out a lot of bugs that other antivirus software couldn't. The free is version is pretty limited though, but a powerful sniffer all the same.

try ESET NOD32 antivirus. i am using that for 3 years. look for a trial of that then download it...then install it, it will ask you for a username and a password...go here for the username and password...http://www.nod32sky.com/ you can choose there..i hacked that website...then when you put the username and the password, your trial will be a full version...that's the best thing you can do..ESET NOD32 is the best antivirus software...
Best one is Bitdefender( I have used it for many yrs without any problems with viruses or worms).
If you need something is light to system resources you should go for NOD32 (lightest antivirus ever)
If you need a free one, AVG is good.

i'd recommend AVG version 8.5 from http://free.avg.com. during the installation, select the custom way of installing and deselect the annoying Link Scanner (if you find it annoying). i installed AVG again and found out that it's not as resource-intensive like before (or maybe it's because i have higher PC specs).
you might also want to try Avira from http://www.avira.com.
hope that helps...
