These days you need a whole lot more than just a virus protection. Only about 15% of all malware is viruses. The rest is worms, trojans, phishing schemes, spyware, etc.

Here's some ideas to make Internet Security Suite (securitycenter) for free. Free is always the best.

--------------------------------------...

1. For your Anti-Virus......(Always use only 1 A-V...You must NEVER use more than one anti-virus, Even an expired anti-virus can cause a major conflict...(did I mention that you MUST uninstall any old anti-virus products?)

For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVirĀ® PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than many of "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. And did I mention that it's free!

Download here:

http://www.free-av.com/

Avoid an anti-virus called AVG (free version). It is wildly popular but has poor virus detection rates.

----------------------------------

2. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs...............(use at least 1 anti-spyware, but 2 is OK). Do a scan with it on a regular basis.

SUPERAntiSpyware:

http://www.superantispyware.com/

--------------------------------------...

3. For your Firewall..........(Always use only 1 software firewall)

A decent free firewall is PC Tools Firewall Plus. One can either choose "Normal User Mode" Or "Expert User Mode"'depending on the detail of alerts and application custom rules desired.

It is one of the few free firewalls that will work (and work well) on Vista as well as XP and 2000.

http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

-------------------------------------

4. And to help protect your computer from ever getting infected with malware in the first place............ (use them both)

SpywareBlaster helps to immunize your computer again certain selected malware.:

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareb...

SiteAdvisor warns you when visiting a potentionally malicious web-site:

http://www.siteadvisor.com/

-----------------------------------

5. And always keep your Windows and all your installed software 100% updated and patched with all critical and security updates from the vendors THIS IS A MUST! In Internet Explorer just click Tools then Windows Updates.

Here is a little online (no download) security tool called The Secunia Software Inspector, that checks a computer for un-secure, un-updated and un-patched apps that may be installed on your computer.

The Secunia Software Inspector checks for possibly vulnerable programs like Adobe, Winamp, Java, Windows, Internet Explorer etc. and notifies if critical security updates are needed. !

Will work using IE, Opera or Firefox.

Use it once a month.

Pretty cool and free at:

http://secunia.com/software_inspector/

Great luck! Enjoy!

Hi, you've prob picked up a virus which can happen anytime regardless of what sites you've been on, the best one i've found so far is SuperantiSpyware , with this you get the first 15 days free for the full professional version, and it does work because l had the same prob so l ran it and it found all the anti spyware, trojans etc and cleared them and so far i've had no other problems with it, so personally l would recommend it although any anti spam software should find and clean it.

Kids. There's your problem.

Reformat. If none of your anti-spyware programs are working, that may be the best and easiest answer...

Dont let your kids use your computer.

Either that or make sure they do not click on anything, nor download anything..... which makes it pretty much pointless for them to use it.

Try getting a different browser like firefox. It should also help keep you a bit safer.

But you have malware.

You should try BitDefender.

Dont disable your firewalls either.

OK, lets try the easy stuff first. Do a free online malware scan with NOD32, this will find and remove most malicious programs: http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/

If that doesn't work you can give SuperAntiSpyware a try, if you want (it's free): http://www.superantispyware.com/

If that doesn't work then the best advice I can give is to get expert help from a dedicated malware-removal forum such as Bleeping Computer or Malware Removal.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/

http://www.malwareremoval.com/

Once you get cleaned up I'd suggest you review your security programs. If you can afford it, buy NOD32 or Kaspersky anti-virus as either of these will protect you against most malware. If money's tight, the free version of Avast anti-virus also helps protect against most malware.

Set up a limited-user account for your kids to use, this will prevent them from accidentally installing any programs or deleting needed files. A Hosts file (free) will protect you, and the kids, from around 20,000 known 'bad' sites. OnlineArmor free firewall is one of the very best.

Avast free AV:

OnlineArmor free firewall:

Well the first thing to do is get rid of all that junk because it has spyware on it in the first place. Here's what I would do:

Uninstall Virgin, Yahoo, anti-spy first.

Download Mozilla Firefox because its waaaay more secure than IE (http://www.firefox.com)

Next, if you don't want to pay for antivirus & antispyware get AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/) and if you do I suggest going to your local retailer and getting either Trend Micro or Webroot.

Clean out your "cookies" and cache under "tools" & "internet options" from your explorer window.

Lastly go to your "help" off the start menu and look up how to fix and adjust your firewall settings.

The explicit pop-ups usually originate from spyware or adware on the computer. The firewall is meant to limit/stop outside access to your computer. You should try cleaning up the Temporary Internet Files folder.

You can try a popup blocker. I have a yahoo tool bar with it built in. You can go to yahoo and download their toolbar for free. This happened to me until I got a popup blocker. Now I have absolutely no popups. You might also want to run your system utilities to get rid of any cookies, temp. internet files, etc. Hope this helps!

Try spyware begone. It's better than all the rest, Spyware Doctor, Spybot search and destroy etc. They had good reputations but unfortunatley they do not stand up well against todays spyware and viruses. Also with spyware begone you can get the full version with updates absolutely free and legally, no sign ups required or anything. Just search for it in google or download.cnet.com
2008-04-25 13:51:22 UTC
You have a spyware problem.

Replace your anti-virus with Avira from http://www.free-av.com/ (it is much better than AVG).

You will see so many people say AVG or Norton. Both of these programs are rubbish, slow, and the first target for malware to disable. Do not use them, please; people like them because they know no better.

Then install Spyware Terminator (turn off web security guard) from http://www.spywareterminator.com/ and AVG anti-spyware free from http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-spyware/

Install, update and scan your computer, removing what is found. After the problem is solved, install K9 (http://www.k9webprotection.com/ ), because I bet your kids downloaded something dodgy, switch to Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/ ) and then install SiteAdvisor, which will inform you if sites are safe or not. (http://www.siteadvisor.com/ )

if you get these obscene pages coming up check you home page settings they may have been changed by adware/spyware

to check this open internet explorer and click on tools >internet options the home page settings are on the general tab go to the website you want as your home page and click the button called use current

if this is then changed you definitely have spyware get a copy of spybot search and destroy from here http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html update it and run a scan and let it delete whatever it finds

Mozilla Firefox has an automatic pop-up blocker built into the program. It also allows you to install additional add-on programs, some of which are security and privacy protecting programs, my recomendation for an add-on is "No Scripts" which blacks Java scripts from site unless you authorize it.

Firefox is available for free download from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

No Scripts free download from http://noscript.net/

You need to download smitfraudfix. I did it and it got rid of everything. Spybot, AVG and all those anti-spyware programs were no help at all because my computer was already infected. Just follow the instructions. Then get a good anti-virus program like Norton and switch to Mozilla Firefox and you will never see a "Due to error Explorer must close" message again!

Get Avast! Anti-virus for professional protection and its free.

Only some of the programs are free though. But avast is excellent and don't get AVG, Spybot, or Spydoctor, they all suck
2008-04-25 13:47:07 UTC
Do you have the yahoo Toolbar and Google toolbar on your destop with the pop-up blockers on?

Also, McAfee and Norton are great anti-virus programs.

Also, go to your internet options and delete all history, temporary internet files and cookies. This will also help when you go from website to website because a lot of websites track which website you go to next. I have my set to delete cookies when I shutdown computer everyday.

Hope this helps.

Go to tools at top of browser and click on Internet options and enable/turn on pop up blocking. Run a full system scan for virus's.

Install a very good Internet Security like Norton Internet Security 2008, set parental control, pop up blocking and set to run a full system scan weekly.

Hope this helps

You can download Windows Defender free from Microsoft, although that only takes care of spyware

I have Norton AntiVirus, it works extremely well against almost every threat to your computer, it is available from somewhere like PC World =)

Good luck =)

First of all you do not need to buy a mac.. they both have their problems.... second Just go to your internet option... go to history clear it out.. then go to your windows folder... click on cookies and make sure you delete all of them and make sure you all go into the history folder in the windows folder and make sure they also have been deleted.. second check to see in you control panel... programs, that no unwanted programs were installed.. if so uninstall them.. then go to your main hard drive (or whatever hard drive you have programs installed too) and click on the program folder and make sure there are not programs there that you did not install or unknowinly installed and delete them. If that doesnt work I would just reinstall windows again...

My guess is your kids are probably clicking on popup banners and going on inappropriate web sites. I'd check your browser's history to be sure about that.

TRY USING PARENT GUARD, BUT IF YOUR KIDS HAVE BEEN USING YOUR COMPUTER, THEY PROBABLY KNOW HOW TO GET AROUND IT. CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD, SO THEY ARE NOT AWARE WHAT IT IS. IF YOU HAVE BEEN GETTING INTO THOSE WEB SITES THEY WILL POP UP MOST OF THE TIME WHEN YOU SIGN ON.

Keep your kids off chat sites. They are the worst offenders ( the sites not the kids) Then run spybot or Norton.
2008-04-25 13:44:20 UTC
go to download.com and search for "advanced windows care", awesome free product and works great on removing spyware and malware and has preventative steps to help eliminate those.
2008-04-25 13:42:33 UTC
you can try going to download.com and downloading Spybot.

oh, and maybe using Mozilla Firefox because it's supposed to work better against things like that.

Download the two free programs below, update them, and run a scan, and if you are being redirected from your home page to these sites then after the scans you may need to reset your home page again. the two programs below are good and have saved me on numerous occasions.
