Dear Yahoo Member,

Your e-mail account was used to send a huge amount of unsolicited spam messages during the recent week. If you could please take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and confirm the attached document so you will not run into any future problems with the online service.

If you choose to ignore our request, you leave us no choice but to cancel your membership.

Now, I know this garbage didn't come from yahoo, but why in the hell is yahoo allowing this garbage even into my bulk folder!? Besides filtering & sending SPAM to my bulk folder, why don't they do something about the SPAMMERS!? Or does yahoo not truly have the legal power to go after these bastard's bc the laws regarding the internet, specifically, in the United States, where I live, just aren't strong enough, nor specific enough.......?

Have you reported the email to yahoo?

If everyone does the same and just complain but not inform then they have little to work with.

Spam is a significant problem and has been estimated to be 90% of all email therefore the fact that you receive very little spam in comparison to real mail that you want suggests that they are doing very well at identifying spam. The problem with them automatically removing spam and not directing it to bulk is that genuine emails may get deleted as well. This I am sure would have you jumping up and down about how they had deleted your emails. Its all about balance. You are the person best placed to make judgements about the level of spam cover you want and to identify those that are or are not legitimate.

Spammers can be prosecuted however it can be very difficult at times as many are now technically savvy and realise that by using publicly available proxy servers they can make the origin of such emails almost untraceable. Proxy servers are a excellent way for all of us to remain anonymous online which helps protect us from attacks on our computer networks therefore a simple ban on these proxy servers would increase the risks to all and not just reduce the spam problem.

These are hugely complex issues and as such they are hugely difficult to deal with.

Yahoo has implemented their own version of spam control. Anything that comes in as BCC and not on your address book AND with your spamguard on will automatically be placed into your bulk mail folder.

Yahoo's implementation of spam control is DomainKeys and this feature is only available to premium subscribers of Yahoo. There are 5 current methods of spam control and Yahoo only uses 1...

- Yahoo Domain Keys (they have it patented)

- Sender Framework Policy (internet standard)

- DNSBL (internet standard)

- Bayesian filtering (internet standard)

- Content filtering (non-widely implemented internet standard)

Yahoo does not want to spend the time, money and manpower to implement a stronger anti-spam system, so instead, they put a clause in their EULA about unsolicited email, stating "it's not our problem" in so many words.
