Does the latest free version of Avast protect against virus, spyware and trojans(malware) or just one of the above? Is it good relatively speaking(ie. it's free) and compared to other free programs? Thanks.

Yes. Avast provides real-time protection for your PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.

Avast works well with the Comodo Pro firewall and does not slow your computer down as much as other things. Also updates regularly. The anti-virus is lightweight and free.

Would also recommend that download additional anti-spyware software my favourite is Malwarebytes.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware works well with Avast, provided that you get the free version, which doesn't have real-time protection. There's a chance of bad interactions with Avast if MBAM’s real-time protection is turned on. Install the free version, then update it and run scans occasionally.

Yes, Avast is a great anti-virus and they have a free version so that is nice.

HOWEVER, that does not mean you are protected online. You need an antispyware/antimalware in addition to that antivirus.

I suggest SUPERAntiSpyware, it has worked well for me and has little-to-no drag on computer resources. You could also use MalwareBytes, or you could use both -- there is no reason not to. They will not interfere and will only increase the ability for you to protect your PC.
