I know i will get thumbs down for this but somebody has to tell you the truth.

Please do not let these people talk you into using AVG free or AVAST. It just doesn't get much sorrier than AVG and AVAST. AVG/Avast is Hacker/spyware/mal ware/Trojan/ and you name it' Friendly. It has no proactive defense. So it is very easy for a hacker or any other bad virus to deactivate it and walk right into your computer undetected. If you really want one that works and doesn't eat systems resources then Defender Pro powered by Kaspersky is the way to go. Yes it's paid. But it does work and work well. I have used it for over a year with no bugs or viruses. Cost about 35 bucks here if you get the 15 in 1. 19 bucks a year to renew here. It has everything all in one. It also has one of the best firewalls you could want. It stops the bad stuff at the door. Unlike AVG & AVAST. It has to be on your hard drive before they ever know it. If they even detect it. If they do detect it most times they won't remove it. Just lock it up in a vault. If you ever delete the program' AVG or AVAST' The virus is turned loose right back on your hard drive. If a AV can't stop a virus/Trojan/ Spy ware you name it before it gets on your hard drive then it's worthless. Norton/ McAfee/ AVG/AVAST. None of these can do that. Right now the only one that is' Is Kaspersky. Anyone who suggest AVG or AVAST to another user must be clueless or a hacker/ virus writer. Do some research here on answers about AVG and the people who get hit with everything buggy under the sun then you decide. Sorry' There is no such thing as a best free AV. Free AV's have security holes in them or they wouldn't be free.

The question was about FREE antivirus. I assume real-time protection is implied among other featured. So the choice is between:

1. avast! Home Edition.

2. Avira

3. AVG.

4. Comodo.

I'd go with avast! or avira. It's starnge to hear that avast! doesn't have proactive protection when it has one and blocks various kinds of threats before they reach the hard drive.

But as to paid antivirus programs, it's an endless debate and I don't want to participate in one.

I think the best free antivirus is Avira. Because it has in it s virus base over milion signatures and it has very good Heuristic Analyser which can protect from new/"new versions" of Malwares(Virus, Trojan, Worm ...).

But free version of this antivirus will not protect you from Pywareas and adwares. To protect your computer from this Malwares you can use SpywareTerminator or Microsofts Windwos Defender which is also free. I use such security in my computer.

Hopefully it helped. Want online help for it you an get form here as well http://www.iyogi.net.

Seriously?

None of them. Not trying to be a dick, but most free antivirus programs fail a majority of the time.

Go with Avast though. It's the best free antivirus in my opinion. After that, install HijackThis and Spybody S&D as backup diagnosis software in case your computer becomes infected.

AVG free & Avast are the 2 most recommended free antivirus programs.

None--anything AV that is free is lacking something you could and should use in any pac. & it will just be AV, most do not have auto updates, most with nag screens etc. Get a whole Norton sercurity Suite like 360--think about it--its just not all there, how protected do you want to be?

AVG Anti-Virus

Follow it up with Stinger, that really gets into the deeper files.

Remember to scan your computer about once a day.
