Why do I keep getting spyware/viruses?

People get viruses for the following reasons -

Surfing habits (going to porn or sites where they know they should not be going to).

P2P (downloading files that are NOT authentic and have trojans within them

Not keeping their computer (both OS and SW) fully updated and patched. If your machine is patched, virus attacking that vulnerabliity will NOT work.

Not keeping their AV up to date, turning off real time scanning, or not doing a full scan at night.

You really should not have much of an issues IF you are being dilegent!

NO anti-virus can ever be relied upon to give any where near 100% protection. None of them do, free or paid. Most only detect about 90 to 95% of all KNOWN viruses. When a brand new virus is released, NO signature-based anti-virus will detect it for several hours up to several days. Some never will detect a particular virus. And over 1200 new variants of viruses and other malware are created by the "black-hats" each and every day.

You should consider an anti-virus program to be your "last line of defense". Safe internet surfing and downloading practices (NO warez, NO P2P, NO Limewire, NO torrents, sorry) along with maintaining your Windows and all your installed software with all critical updates and security patches should be your frontline defense.

Greetings. My name's Sanjay Patel, and I currently hold an honorary Master's degree in the field of Computer Science. I am aware of, and have personal knowledge related to your question. There are computer maintenance businesses which are probably in your area, however they come at the cost of hiring a professional to enter your home. There may also be some local destinations where you can drop off your computer and wait to have a technician look at it. These options can often be costly, and pretty inconvenient. The answer to this question can probably be found doing a little extra research on Google.

A well-running computer can be a hard thing to maintain. From my experience, there is but only One software which is reputable- and consistently reliable for healing sick, slow computers. Reimageā„¢ is a world-renown, easy to use software designed by Forensic scientists and made for the average person. This thing will fix literally just about ANY problem you could possibly be having with your PC. Reimage was recommended to me by a Professor during my 2nd year of Graduate school.

I would suggest that you find another Anti-spy/virus program. Because as you have probably figured it out by now Trend Micro has poor protection, hence the abnormal behavior.

If you want very good protection. I would recommend that you purchase Kaspersky http://www.kaspersky.com/. (From a store like Future Shop, or Staples. So you have the physical copy of the program). From what I have heard about it. It seems to be one of the best protection programs out there.

Here's some free Anti-virus programs, that I use myself, they are very effective.

1 Ad-Aware 2008, Much more effective than previous versions and faster, does not suck up system resources like the previous versions, also there various skins to suit your preferences.

http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2008/3000-8022_4-10045910.html?hhTest=1

2 Spybot - Search & Destroy, its a little out of date but it works.

http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10122137.html?hhTest=1

3 SpywareBlaster, blocks potentially damaging applications and programs from running.

http://www.download.com/SpywareBlaster/3000-8022_4-10196637.html?hhTest=1

4 Simple File Shredder, it isn't an anti spy, but it shreds unnecessary files including cookies and it speeds up system performance.

http://www.download.com/Simple-File-Shredder/3000-2092_4-10301332.html?hhTest=1

5 MRU-Blaster, detects and cleans MRU (most recently used) lists on your computer. By looking at these MRU lists, someone could determine what files you opened/saved/looked at, what their file names were, and much more! (And, in many cases, the lists are displayed in drop-down menus automatically.) (From website.)

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/mrublaster.html

Also. I suggest that you stay away from online anti-spy scans. As it is not hard for a cracker to hack it, and insert some malicious code into the program which after scanning will give you even more virus's. (That's how my computer got infected once, and after that I have been advising people to stay away from them).

I personally don't like AVG, it screwed up my computer after I Un-Installed it, and Avast didn't work for me. And Trend Micro, has poor detection rates (I tried it a few night's ago (downloaded) and scanned, it found 3 items. I ran Ad-Aware after that and it found 18 items that trend micro passed right over).

And I would advise you to stay away from P2P, programs. As they are an excellent vector for infections.

Hope this help's

I am a professional developer with Microsoft, and have about 10 years of experience in the field of Computer Engineering. Most problems with PC's are the result of malicious software that infected a Computer. Examples of this are things such as malware, viruses, trojans, spyware, adware, root kits, and worms. In other cases, they are the result of stability issues due to crashes, freezes, or Hardware Issues. Some examples of hardware issues could be a dirty cooling fan causing the computer to overheat, or low memory due to lack of RAM, which could cause the PC to run slowly. You may think it could be a virus, or malware, or registry issues, but it could be something else entirely. As a computer layman, one may find it hard to really ascertain what exactly is causing the problems, without having a professional do an in depth analysis of your PC.

As professional computer repairs can be quite costly, I would recommend to you a Software that many of us in the tech department here at Microsoft use personally and professionally to diagnose and repair computer problems very quickly. It is a software called Reimage, from https://tr.im/ReimageRepair .. In my personal experience, and in the experience of many of my associates, this is probably the best software ever created for those experiencing computer troubles. This is likely to remedy just about ANY problem your computer could possibly be having, and have it running like new. Reimage has won several awards, and been featured in publications such as PC Mag.

Depending on the exact issue at hand, a thorough Google search may be be your best bet at resolving for yourself whatever is causing dysfunction. Nonetheless, as a computer technician who runs his own business troubleshooting, repairing, rebuilding, and optimizing computers... I can probably guide you in the right direction. However, without having your PC directly at my fingertips, I can only make general suggestions. In this case, I would surely check out the highly esteemed world-class Reimage software from https://tr.im/ReimageRepair ..

When people come into our shop and drop off their PC for repair, the first thing we do is run an initial diagnostic. For this function, I use Reimage exclusively. In many cases, I am able to diagnose very quickly what is making their computer run slow, or is giving them the crashes/freezes/errors/grief that brought them to me in the first place. After the diagnostic, in a majority of cases, Reimage is able to remedy All problems and replace any corrupted Windows files. I then proceed to charge a handsome fee for my services that took me all but 30-60 minutes to complete. Obviously sometimes I must work more, but often this is all it takes. It is a very powerful tool that would likely put me and others in my industry out of business if more people knew of it. So don't tell anyone lol, and Good Luck with your PC.

Update your Windows and anti virus/anti spyware as often you can ..Get a good firewall...people who often use file swapping software (Limewire, KaZaa, BitTorrent, etc.) or trade pictures on social networking systems always have em .. If you visit rack sites to avoid paying for software , you;re a primary target of spyware and malicious virus.

I have been using the net for a while now. The best solution are as follows:

Don't go to unknown sites.

Don't download using torrents.

Have a good anti-virus, I have been using Avast Free Home edition and say that it is the very best.

Have a external firewall.Switch off windows firewall and use Comodo Firewall free (the latest version is difficult to modify hence I have been using 2.4.18.184)

Have CcCleaner and use it after shutting down the internet. You can keep the cookies of known sites and delete all others.

You can download all this from filehippo.com/freewarefiles.com.

Ad-aware se free/pro, Spybot and others dont do much but check the cookies and use a lot of system resourse.

Trend micro is a very poor antivirus. It got a grade of D in recent tests. Look at this antivirus rankings.

http://www.virus.gr/portal/en/content/2008-06%2C-1-21-june

I would suggest to use anyone that is among the top 10 in the link above. In fact the number 10, avira antivir classic is a free software yet it ranks so high.

If you're using mcafee, norton or any other program not in the top 10 of the link, then you will keep getting spyware/viruses.
2008-07-20 15:28:25 UTC
Does that give ou a clue that your Trend Micro is not doing a good job? It should.

Dump it.

Get this EXCELLENT tool:

Avast free Home Edition

Get it here:

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.ht...

And please do a "thorough" scan as soon as you get it downloaded. The user interface is simple. Click the left side, and in the top menu that comes up, select thorough scan.

When it finds a culprit it throws up an alarm, then you DELETE the culprit, (do not quaranteen).

Then allow it to run all of the time, and you will be completely protected. It will "automatically" update itself, also for free.

You only need to renew your registration once a year, also free.

Note: I KNOW of several people who have used AVG and Norton and have gotten a virus anyway.

Don't go with Zone Alarm as it is hoggy and conflicting.

I've tried them all, and have had wonderful results with DEPENDABLE AVAST for the last 5 years.

The corporation I work for uses the Pro version, and has never has an incident. Avast is your answer.

I would also suggest you download a copy of Iobit's free personal edition of 'Advanced Window Care.' Use it each day as it does everything to keep your computer running smoothly. Go here to download it. http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html?Str=download

In addition, when you do run a virus and spyware scan, make sure your 'System Restore' is temporarily turned off as malicious code can hide there and not be found in a regular virus scan.

To temporarily turn off your System Restore, click Start then right click 'My Computer' then click 'Properties' then click the tab 'System Restore' then click the box 'Turn off system restore on all drives.' Following, then run your virus and spyware scans.

A good online scanner, free, used by many here is Trend Micro's 'Housecall' scanner. You can use your computer while it scans too. When finished it will remove viruses and spyware. Go here to start your scan, but again turn off your System Restore first: http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Good Luck!

Funny? What do you mean by that? You may know exactly what you mean but you're only one of a near endless mass posting questions here with only the vaguest details needed to solve the problem.

There are a number of reasons why you still get infected by malware.

You use the internet a lot - you visit pages hosting malware, some of it not placed by the people who posted the page.

You click on all sorts of banner ads - never a good idea.

You use the internet with your security settings set too low.

You click open file attachments to email messages - yes, even those sent by friends.

You download a lot of software - some of it websites not connected to the software's actual maker and laced by this 3rd party w/malware; some of it from the publisher but still containing malware (the existence of which is bburied in the EULA).

You relentessly trade files over a peer-share network, and have managed to pick up some malware, probably in an .exe file for a popular game or app.

That's the best I can do unless/until you flesh out what is apparently wrong with your machine and what you had been doing with it prior to its funny performance.

As stated by many other people, be aware of your web browsing habits.

Since you currently have a problem that is not being corrected by your Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware program; the safest thing to do is to reinstall your operating system [and drivers and all software]. This may not be the best option if you do not have the OS or driver discs available. IF you have created restore points or backed up your computer, then just restore it to a point before this issue started.

In the future, I would suggest creating a "limited" user account for daily use and a separate admin account that you only use as needed. Try Firefox instead of IE for a web browser too, it is a bit more secure.

Remember internet "security" software is far from fool proof, the best thing to do is to be diligent in your browsing habits and be very careful what you download.

you need a virus program and a firewall as well as internet security, because although that program warns you it obviously isn't stopping viruses getting into your computer. You can obtain viruses without downloading anything. For example, I never go on any "bad sites" but I still get spy cookies on my computer. I recommend spy sweeper and webroot firewall as they are very effective at blocking most viruses and stuff to start with, and if it can't stop it, it picks it up in scanning and deletes it with no hassle. Hope this helps!

Quit using Internet Explorer! It's agar for a malware farm. Download and install Firefox. Then install the Firefox add-on AdBlock Plus. Then all popups and inline ads will simply not show up. It also doesn't allow malware into your OS core as Internet Explorer does because Microsoft does not consider other browsers to be a part of the OS core.

Download Glary utilities and AVAST home edition both are free and effective these can be downloaded from www.download.com

first update their database and then run glary utilities for removing all type of junk material and trojans malware things like that

then run Avast in boot scan mode means laptop will reboot and that time avast starts scanning select option delete all infected files and you should not find any problem there after one thing to remember AVAST is real time scanner so keep it always on.

trend micro is one of the best protective programs but if you use P2P software then you might as well not bother with firewall or a security suite as they are bypassed by using those programs and so your system gets compromised...

you can also get and use more then 1 spyware programs at the same time as not all will find all the issues

i recommend using spybot search and destroy and adaware

these two lead the industry

also have on hand hijackthis avery usefull program for tweaking and cleaning your system plus get CCleaner

your notebook has been compromised but all is not lost YET!

I used to have Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Secutity, was really good. Some of the reasons why you still getting spyware viruses is cause some of the sites we visit; especially those for dating or close encounters are putting in your system whitout your permission spyware. My advice is to change your actual antivirus for Antispyware, which is very good in removing spyware.

Get AVG antivirus free edition. It does the same thing by scanning the site and stuff. It also scans the computer files. It's the best thing I've ever used. I had a virus and 3 threats and it got rid of them. My friend had the master of malware aka: Jeefo Virus. It got rid of that too. It works great. It could actually be the software that you have that is causing this. So try AVG free edition. Use download.com because if you get it from the main site it usually gives you a free trial and that's not good. So, use download.com. The same thing happened to my laptop. I am using Windows Vista and Laptop is of Dell company (Inspiron Model 1520 ). Both of these combiantions doesn't allow any program to be opened without any permission. More than that If I had some virus on my system It always create more problems and started affecting other progrmas on ma laptop. I tried McAfee & Symentic antiviruse but from the time I have started using AVG free addition I am tension free. Firefox is also supporting and I am having complete satisfaction now. I believe it depend on your system requirment also. I dont know if somebody else will have samse satisafaction.

Mike pretty much hit the nail on the head for you. I use Defender Pro Internet Security. It is a Kaspersky product. They grantee that if you use there product on a clean computer your computer will stay clean. If you do get a infection that causes catastrophic failure or if they can't help you clean it off they will pay for repairs to your computer. If you use fire fox here is another program that will help you keep your computer clean.KeyScrambler. It is a add on for fire fox3. Type it into your browser and read about it for yourself. I have never been to fond of anything McAfee but i found a small program called McAfee SiteAdvisor. I like it. It will let you know if your going to a bad site before you ever go to it. I also use Super Anti spy ware as a backup to DP and i also use Spy ware Blaster. It is a neat little program that watches all your open ports.

If your anti virus isn't working the way you want it to there are a few that you can get online that are free, such as AVG. I also recommend not downloading any questionable file especially from a client like limewire. Always have your pc set up to inspect each file individually before it opens, so that if it finds a virus or anything malicious it can quarantine it before it spreads to your pc.

Have you considered that it may not be due to a virus but a malicious codec that is causing these problems, many AV will find but not remove these threats.

Try a scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

Simply download, install, update and perform Quick Scan...you might be surprised at what it finds.

Also use Spyware Doctor Free Basic Edition:

http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_installer_new.html?hl=en&gl=us&ciNum=12

Its free with Google pack, untick all boxes except Spyware Doctor. Download install, update and run. You will then also have realtime monitoring enabled, whereas most anti-spyware require manual scans.

Three words, pal

SWITCH TO LINUX

You'll get significantly less viruses, almost NONE at all.

Or Mac, but they still get occasional viruses.

Or just update your AV software and dont go to inappropriate sites.

Don't ever, not ever, use Internet explorer. Windows shot themselves in the foot with that browser because it's part of the operating system. Use Firefox or Opera and the crap will stop. Also, control how javascript acts,, dump cookies when you close your browser (you can set all the cookies you want to keep ask us how)

Firefox or Opera doesn't have the kind of permissions that are built into internet explorer so it's much harder to pick up a virus. I have never used any type of virus protection and maybe once a year I'll pick something minor up.I use a backup to fix things and go on my way.

Threatfire is a good free program.

Besides getting a decent free anti-virus/spyware, I would suggest using Firefox or Opera (http://www.opera.com/) as your browser: they are supposed to be less vulnerable.

The safest way to browse is to use SandboxIE (http://www.sandboxie.com/ ). It creates a virtual environment around your browser. Once done browsing, you just delete the sandbox and everything is deleted. You do have the option to save downloaded stuff.
2008-07-20 03:37:10 UTC
I had a situation where I would scan my pc, and it would pick up loads of high risk problems (when you say its picking up lots of stuff, make sure they are high risk and not just tracking cookies-which you going to get by going to almost any site- spyware programs pick that up, and should list them as low risk, but the wont do any harm) anyway I would delete the stuff, open my web browser, rescan, and they were all back- I eventually found that it was one of the firefox add-ons that were causing the problem- so I just deleted the addons, then installed them one by one till I found the problem- so if nothing else, check your add ons- (if you have any that is)

if it is the free version that is your problem, all free versions of any kind quit working after a short period, even though it says it is doing its job, even though you think it is doing its job,it is not!!!!!I if you have the paid version you have to renew it also for it to keep working right, nothing is free,i am not going to make anyone mad by telling you which one to get,but i will tell you this, uninstall all spyware, all anti virus, even in the regestry, then install the norton 360 15 day trial version(google, type in 'norton 360',go to the 15 day trial version, download it and THEN you will be able to tell the difference

i had the same problem and i got a strong virus and trend micro could not do anything and then i changed my antivirus to nod32 smart security and i removed the virus which trendmicro could not do that and now nod32 smart security works great.

Your antivirus will not stop, nor will it remove, spyware. All computers that are logged into the internet get spyware. That's an unfortunate part of today's living. Not all spyware is bad, but over time, it can cause trouble. Get SuperAntiSpyware and USE IT WEEKLY! You need to update it weekly, also.

Most spyware comes from Web sites or (less frequently) contaminated e-mails or e-mail attachments. Be careful which sites you visit, and which e-mail attachments you open.

More than likly you aren't scanning often enough. Most folks don't realize going to normal everyday websites you still build up junk in your computer.
2008-07-20 03:50:34 UTC
You are using a crappy antivirus. Get Kaspersky Internet security 2009.

Don't use Internet Explorer. Use Mozilla Firefox or Opera.

Well as long as your anti-virus is finding them and is removing them you should be fine. However you can avoid getting viruses/spyware by not downloading or opening suspicious files or files with unknown content.
2008-07-20 02:49:37 UTC
Trend Micro's suite provides only average security against malware, especially spyware. Most of these so called all in one programs have some holes in them. The best thing to do is to build your own suite of programs to defend every part of your system. Best of all most of the programs are free! Here is what you should do and I promise you your computer will be free of malware...

1)Uninstall PC-cillin and install Mcafee Viruscan via aol active virus shield. During the install select customize and do not install the firewall. It's free with a valid AOL email. If you do not have an AOL email account download Avira's free antivirus progam *I recommend Mcafee over Avira free because Mcafee has email protection and IM shield.

http://daol.aol.com/security/virusscan-plus

http://www.free-av.com/en/products/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html

2)Download Comodo's free firewall. It is the best firewall available but read carefully during the install and only select the firewall. Don't download the defense + component because it uses more system resources and is not necessary with the rest of my recommendations. The first time that you start the firewall go to defense + options and select disable. You will have to restart your computer but you can still use the scanner which scans for viruses and spyware. Also make sure to install the leak test for the firewall! And make sure Windows firewall is disabled!

http://www.download.com/Comodo-Firewall-Pro/3000-10435_4-10460704.html

3)Download SuperAntiSpyware Professional. It is a legitimate program and it is a great spyware remover and I recommend buying the professional version because they have an option to receive lifetime updates and it offers real time protection. This option does not often come in free spyware removers so it is worth paying for. This will be your first line of defense against spyware. Light on system resources!

http://www.superantispyware.com/

4)Download PC Tools Threatfire. This software compliments your anti virus program by monitoring your system for suspicious or malicious actions. Also, it scans for unknown threats using heuristics and scans for rootkits as well. Threatfire is not a program designed around a database of known threats but rather acts in the background intelligently to thwart processes common to malware. It does not conflict with Mcafee but compliments it and compliments the firewall as well. It is a must have! *In case you download AVG 8.0 beware that threatfire seems to cause conflict with this program but that is the only antivirus I've seen have problems with it so far.

http://www.threatfire.com/

5)Download Ad Aware 2008 free edition. This is just a spyware scanner but it is very thorough and is a second line of defense against spyware. It is recommended by the experts to employ at least two anti spywares because no single program can catch all of the threats. However make sure only one of them is offering real time protection or system instability and slow downs can occur.

http://www.lavasoft.com/single/trialpay.php

6)Use Mozilla Firefox and avoid Internet Explorer at all costs. Firefox is safer. Download Spyware Blaster. This is another legit program which protects your browser against known bad sites, tracking cookies, and known browser exploits. The combination of Firefox and Spyware Blaster should shield you from most threats when you are browsing, but the best protection is common sense. Avoid sites which seem strange or spam a lot. This software does not scan but protects in real time. Does not drain system resources!

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

7)Keeping with the above stated philosophy, download Mcafee Site Advisor. It works with Google, Yahoo, and MSN search engines to let you know if links to websites are safe or unsafe. Green checks represent safe sites, red X's represent malicious sites. This software even presents you with the ability to read user reviews and Mcafee's own explanation as to why the site is good or bad. A must have for a clean system!

http://www.siteadvisor.com/

8)Practice safe web browsing and if using a P2P file sharer, check the size of the file to see if it corresponds with what it should be give or take. Don't open unknown emails and only play media content from trusted websites. Also be careful with compressed files. These habits will keep you safe.

If you go to lots of bad sites, you'll get bad stuff. There is a program called 'Bufferzone' that creates a virtual drive on your computer. Stuff that goes in there can't get out. I think there's a free trial. It's pretty bullet-proof.

I have PC-Cillin as well. It usually finds about 65 adware programs on my computer, which automatically download every time you get a popup window while on the internet. They are nothing to worry about, but if it makes you feel better, you can delete them every time. If that's all they are, then I doubt its making your computer act funny.

Again, it could very well simply be detecting all the adware programs that you have.

check with your Internet provider if they have a reliable anti virus for free, most of them do
2008-07-20 00:10:48 UTC
Your Internet Security is doing the job it was designed to do.

You keep getting Spyware / Viruses because you bypass the warning.

Install a popup blocker.

Just don't click on things you have been warned about.

Your PC-cillan is a paid for Internet Security Suite or a FREE one? or a trial?

Hi..

the act of sending viruses & worms is to steal ur personal info. Info like credit card number, passwords & other vital details which can be useful for them. U know ur credit card number can be sold online for a cheap price as low as 2 to 5 cents.

Now the purpose of sending spam mail is to promote their web site & to increase the website traffic, the website with higher hits & traffice can be sold for thousands od dollars. If a person have 100 active email ID he can sell it for 10 - 20$. So, the always want to know whether ur actively using the the email ID or not....

In addition to virus checking, you need other security protection such as a router and you need to be aware of safe practices. This article has details on everything that you need http://www.ask-the-computer-doc.com/computer-internet-security.html

It might pay to change to either Bitdefender or Norton security.

I don't know much about that brand, but sometimes antivirus softwares are really bad and detect EVERYTHING as a virus, even if it's not.

I suggest purchasing NOD32 antivirus, it has good protection but it doesn't catch stupid things. (ie, it won't catch "antispyware.exe" as a trojan)
