I downloaded VLC Media Player and now I get a TON of pop ups. How do I get rid of this malware?

On every single site there are a ton of ads. Like all along the top and sides of every single page on youtube or google, like 5 different ads on each tab that wasn't there until 2 days ago, its crazy. And they load a few seconds later than the rest of the page so I keep accidentally clicking them because they replace the thing I actually want to click on by shifting the page down a little, which creates a pop up, and anytime I click on something to open a link I get a pop up. Like if I'm clicking the google or youtube logos to go to the home screen. Obviously some sort of malware is running on my computer. It first started on Saturday when I downloaded VLC Media Player because I made a video and produced it in AVI format and was trying to find something to play it, and my friend had my laptop and downloaded this, along with some free bonus virus. Once I saw the effect it had on my internet, I did a quick scan with Norton, which deleted 40 tracking cookies, and then I did a full system scan when I got home that found nothing more of note. I uninstalled VLC, but whatever damage has already been done is done. I then downloaded adblock from google chrome, but it didn't make a difference and I don't know what else I can do. I have windows 8 if that makes any difference, but what do you think I can do?

Kisses all around

Once you’ve run them, download the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, to try and ensure that nothing has been left behind. Install it and get updates, then run a full scan:

I've never had a problem when I've downloaded VLC Media Player. Get it from here:

Yeah, don't blame VLC for whatever you have. I can think of a couple scenarios that could explain this, like downloading it off some third-party shady site that attached something else.

If you had compiled it on your own you wouldn't be in this mess.
