Question:
Question about torrents and Peer Guardian...?
2010-01-28 09:44:15 UTC
I just downloaded Peer Guardian 2 for Vista because i read its unsafe to download torrents without it (for obvious reasons) and would first like to know how it works? and what do i change the settings to?

Also i read in a forum that i need to open my router settings online and find the area that says "Port Range Forwarding" to add additional ports to speed up downloads. Is there anyone using a BT home hub that knows where this is?

Any help on being safe whilst downloading torrens will be very helpful.

(this is for my book btw, err, yer) !

I have no idea if PG even really works, but it makes me feel better. Also, it's impossible for PG to harm your computer. I've been using it for years and it does nothing dangerous. At all.

a good way to speed up your downloading is to find a free port on utorrent's settings, it'll show you how to search for one when you install it. i recommend getting utorrent.

I'm not to familiar with Peer Guardian, but I can't see how it would really make a difference, like another answerer said; make sure get it from a good spot, in addition, I THINK they're checked for bugs anyway...? Like I said; I think, I'm not positive! And uTorrent is a pretty good, reliable torrent downloader. Just download the file (using the torrent) and check it for viruses.

To access your settings, you'll need to be connected to the router and enter; 192.168.1.1 into the address bar, that should work, well, at least it does for the majority of router's, and access the relevant setting therewith.

There is a lot of disagreement as to whether PeerGuardian is any good.

It is the blocklist that PG uses that matters. PG uses the BISS blocklist. Supposedly the blocklist contains the IPs of known anti-P2P groups and PG will block that IP from connecting to you.

Even assuming the blocklist is valid, most bittorrent clients have a built-in IP filter (that can use the BISS blocklist or another) that works better.

As to the port, it is important to clear the way for the single port that a bittorrent client uses. It is not necessary or safe to open more than that one port. Portforward.com has many guides for this.

There are some links here that will help with port forwarding and speed in general. If your client is listed, its guide will have a link to portforward's guides for your program and many routers.

it's not true. it's secure to download torrents, it depends on witch ones you download. you can destroy your computer too if you have peer guardian. i am using utorrent since 2 years and nothing happened, just download from safe spots.
