Recently I moved from my auntie's house in my small town to an apartment complex with a free internet connection. Anyway, I've been talking to this guy I met online and I'm wondering if there was a chance that he could find out my IP address, would he see the IP address from my new place or would the IP address from before I moved still show up? Im not really nervous that he will find out about where I live NOW because I live in a huge high rise with a lot of people and security, but I didn't want him to have my old location because that's my auntie's house and I didnt want her to get involved.

(I know NOTHING about computers, and I'm really nervous.)

In most cases IP addresses are dynamically assigned by the ISP, your Internet service provider. Your apartment building would have nothing to do with that. Although this 'guy' can easily see your IP address on your Internet connection, it will show up on Internet records as belonging to the phone company (or whatever your ISP is) not you personally. Moreover (unless you are running a server or doing specialized stuff), this IP address is usually 'dynamic' meaning that it changes periodically and randomly. And even when a particular IP address is pointing at you thru the phone company for a long time, like many days or even weeks if you have a continuous DSL connection, the ISP will no way give this information out to just anyone except by a court order. So, the answer is 'no.' Nobody can figure out where you live JUST based on your IP address. But there are other ways people can track you down, thru your e-mail or social networking, if these are not well secured. If you are e-mailing this guy, you might want to consider getting a 'blind' e-mail proxy service which is usually free. Good luck and stay safe!!

PS: If you want to investigate my claim and see EXACTLY what can be found out about your IP address, simply click below or Google WHATISMYIP. Go to one of those 'hits' to get your actual IP address (It is an 8 digit sequence, in pairs, separated by periods). Assume now that anyone on the planet can easily obtain this very same info, which is true. Now copy that IP to your clipboard. Next, click the second link below or Google WHOIS. Several sites will come up. Paste your IP address in to one of those and see where it leads you. You will see that this IP info WILL NOT point back to you personally, but to your ISP. From that, people can tell where you are generally, like Southern California, etc., but nothing more. Try it!

It all depends on your method of communication.

If by email from your computer and an email client (program) like Thunderbird eg, you can get

the IP address from the headers in the email if one were to dig for it.

Not so with webmail. In any case, it will just give the number that was assigned to you by your ISP.

That will be the adress that relates to the ISP's server, which will only give a general area of your location.

Since you moved ,the old location is of no consequence, unless your new location it's so close that

that you login to the same server.Even then, your IP address is most likely renewed when you moved.

As to the guy online -just be careful -there's a lot of misrepresentation online ,with fake pics and stories.

Good luck.

If you have send email to him from old connection (old house) then he may be able to find out what is your IP address and location by using free email trackers:

http://www.ipaddresslocation.org/email-tracking/email-header.php

http://www.find-ip-address.org/email-search/find-email.php

If you have talk via chat only without sending anything to him (you did not said how you communicate with him chat, email, messenger etc...) then is chance almost zero that he can find out your IP address.

Hope this helps!

it form of feels to me which you have a router on your gadget that has equipped-in DHCP applications. if so, on your computers, choose the alternative for computerized IP handle project and DNS settings (i.e. receive an IP handle immediately and receive DNS server handle immediately). Then, as quickly as the computers turn on, they're going to ask the DHCP server for a valid IP handle and the DHCP server will make particular that IP addresses it assigns to them do no longer conflict with one yet another. The sub-internet mask and DNS settings can be immediately set by potential of the DHCP (dynamic host configuration protocol) server. If this does not resolve the priority, that's probable that somebody else on the community is placing their IP settings manually and are figuring out on an IP handle that clashes with different gadgets on the community. in case you have a instantaneous community (which i've got confidence you do), make certain which you hire risk-free practices settings (e.g. WPA-PSK and MAC handle Filtering) so as that anybody interior of sight (e.g. pals) won't be able to connect on your community. seek for suggestion out of your instantaneous router or get admission to factor's handbook on a thank you to do this. in case you nonetheless prefer to set your IP addresses manually, the settings you have given seem ok and assigning the different workstation the subsequent bigger handle might desire to artwork. bypass away something of the settings a similar on each workstation. you may additionally prefer to income that IP addresses you have assigned them are no longer interior the style that the DHCP server will immediately assign to different gadgets on the community. ** be conscious ** you may in uncomplicated terms talk with people who answer questions in the event that they have provided you (and different Yahoo! solutions customers) with a facility for contacting them. click on the call/identity of the guy to work out their Yahoo! solutions profile and links to any approaches of verbal replace that they've enabled.
