Question:
How do I block future spam from senders who are continuously sending me repeated and/or new messages?

I have been receiving a lot of spam in my inbox - I don't know how I started getting them in the first place but I delete them by hitting the spam button on the tool bar - but, they still keep coming from the same senders. How can I block a sender?

You don't say what email client you are using.

I use Thunderbird, and I can specify a rule that uses patternmatching on the sender email name to send all matches to the spam folder. I do this for specific senders and rely upon the bayesian filters for spammers that use random sender email names.

Stephanie,

This question is a little difficult to answer as you haven't said how you read mail. I'll give it a whirl though.

The basic strategy is, IMO, two-pronged. First, you want to report the address that is constantly sending you spam to the people who run the site. This is typically easy. For example, if you are getting spam from "bozo@anydomain.com" you should forward the spam message to "abuse@anydomain.com" and "postmaster@anydomain.com". That will almost certainly get it to the right person. It is best if you can include the entire header (all the techie stuff that your mail reader hides from you). Typically a "show original message", "show all headers" or "show message properties" option will give you this. Frequently the user name that claims to be the sender in a spam email is actually faked, but the email provider has more time and resources to track down this problem and they're typically concerned about their reputation so they can get quite motivated.

Second, you need to tell your mail reader that they are a spammer. This is very reader dependent. In Outlook 2003, for example, the Action menu has a Junk E-Mail submenu in which you can choose to mark the sender as a junk emailer. Then you're done. Most Web mail readers have a button you can click to mark an email as Junk or Spam. This typically will reduce the mail from the person (although it might take multiple markings in some mailers).

If your mailer has no junk or spam setting, then you need to create a "rule". Almost every mailer has this. Depending on the mail reader they will likely have some combination of the words "message", "mail", "filters", "rules", "automated" (eg: "automated message filters"). Whatever they are called, they all work the same way. You set a condition, in this case it will be the sender of the email (might be labeled "Sender", "From", or something similar in your mail reader). You will set it to the sender who has been spamming you. Then you set an action to do with the emails that match your condition. In your case (and depending on the mail reader) you'll "delete it", "mark it as spam/junk", "permanently delete it", or something of that flavor.

Most importantly, do not click on any links on the spam, if your mail reader allows you to block images, you should do that for spam (many mail readers do this by default and then allow you to enable pictures for each sender), and do not visit the web sites that are advertised. The last thing you want to do is to give the spammer that your even glimpsing at their email. It only motivates them to send more.

If these solutions are not sufficient for you other things you might consider are switching mail hosts (GMail does a great job of blocking spam, Yahoo! seems not as good but still useful), or installing a program to block email (SpamAssassin is the only one I'm familiar with - its good and free). Both of these solutions work well but require a bit more effort to set up.

Hope this has helped,
