Question:
Should I ask for a promotion now?  Should I wait?  Does management automatically promote people? ?

I am currently employed at a Fortune 500 tech company for the past 1 and a half years, at my current position of "IT Help Desk II".  I did not have any previous work experience or internships before this position, and I got this position a couple of months after graduating from college with a masters in science degree in Cyber Security.

During the past 1.5 years at my current position I got certifications as:
* "Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals"
* "AWS Certified: Cloud Practitioner"
* "Aviatrix Certified Engineer - Multi-Cloud Network Associate"
* "Fortinet Network Security Associate 2"
* "Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator(LFCS)"

I really want to get promoted to Systems Administrator or Systems Engineer.  If not any of those two, I want still want to get promoted to something.

Should I ask for a promotion now?  Who do I ask for a promotion?
Should I wait?
Does management automatically promote people?

The skills assessment, which usually takes place every year, will be a great time to ask your supervisor for your promotion.

During this assessment interview, you will tell him:

- your successes, but also your failures, because he will not forget to address them;

- your objectives, as well as your expectations;

- your skills and performance.

This face-to-face meeting with your manager is a special moment that should not be neglected because he will be attentive to your proposals and your desire to access new functions.

However, there may also be other times or opportunities to request a promotion, such as:

- your professional network which can be of great use to you, cultivate it;

- the increased activity of the growing company;

- restructuring of a department;

- or new contracts, etc.

... are conducive to career development.

nobody will give you extra money for no reason. compile a list of how you are more productive now, and go ask them.

they also have no idea you are interested in a promotion if you don't tell them. i think everyone should keep a regular casual conversation with their boss, manager, or supervisor, just so they are on the same page.

Some say "it's not who you know it's who you blow". Prove you're self,provide solutions to problems,talk like you have a head on your shoulders,be respectful toward superiors and other employees,don't undermine them to their face or behind their back and eventually someone will take notice and might move you up a little.

It's the hard times. You should be thankful you have a job and you have a salary. Best to delay any promotion requests until next year.

Different companies handle promotions in different ways.

You need to talk to the head of HR to find out how promotions happen in your company.  The two basic questions you need to ask would be - How do promotions happen here - and what do I need to do to be considered for a promotion.  Let your HR manager know that you are interested in advancing with the company and that you would like to know how you can help that happen.

In the company I work at, "promotions" don't typically happen.  Openings happen - people bid on the opening - the most qualified candidate gets the position.    If there is not an opening for a certain position - there is no way to be "promoted" into that position.
