I've used AVG on and off for years with no trouble. Aside from being free, it also uses fewer resources than a lot of the paid programs, which can slow anything but the latest computers down to a crawl. Of course, I also use common sense, like not opening unknown attachments or opening files from a floppy without scanning. Periodically I'll use the Trend Housecall online check just to be sure. I also have Spybot or AdAware on any computer I use, and my e-mail programs are set to shovel most spam into its own folder.

While a huge debate is ongoing about what security precautions to consider when using the internet, this is the setup I use, and have used for the last couple of years without incident.

Firefox Web Browser:http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

AVG Anti-virus: http://free.grisoft.com/

AVG Anti-Rootkit:http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-rootkit/

Comodo Firewall Pro: http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Comodo VerificationEngine{anti-phishing protection}: http://www.vengine.com/

NoAdware Spyware Scanner {paid}:http://noadware.net/

SuperAntiSpyware Scanner: http://www.superantispyware.com/

SpywareBlaster{acts like a spyware firewall}: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

CCleaner{system optimizer and privacy tool}:http://www.ccleaner.com/

Use only one program at a time for a particular application to avoid confliction, and apart from NoAdware, all the programs listed above are free of charge.

Best of luck.

AVG Free in combination with Threatfire.

These are not 2 separate antiviruses.. cause that will usually cause conflicts between the 2.

Threatfire is actually an add-on, and adds behavior-based detection

You can try Ad Aware, Spy bot - search and destroy and Spy ware Doctor for some good spy ware removers. AVG Anti virus and McAfee virus scan are also supposed to help a lot to remove virus. check out http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-sAFtLsc8erIoh.ENhksr2KyG for more details.
