Question:
My computer was recently attacked by a trojan.. and now IE won't work..?
2010-05-20 10:26:32 UTC
Yesterday I got a trojan.. it must have been from watching a video. It was called Anti Virus Software or something.
Anyway today my dad managed to get rid of it by updating my Norton Anti Virus.
however while my computer was being attacked, I couldn't access almost everything, and Internet Explorer would not open.
Now everything appears to be back to normal but my IE is still not working. it opens the window but its just that the webpage cannot be displayed, no matter what site i type in.

Please help: how do I fix my Internet explorer?

at the moment i am using Firefox, but I really want my computer just back to normal with IE
thank you. =/

Are you able to search or download anything? If so, I'd suggest downloading a small 'free' software called 'Malwarebytes AntiMalware' onto your desktop from the following link:

http://fileforum.betanews.com/download/M…

(If you can't download from the infected computer, then you need to download it from a clean computer and transfer it to the infected computer via flash/pen drive or cd, and follow the instructions above).

Install the program, run it and update the definition. Once installed, select quick scan, and let the software scan your system. Once the scan is finished, it will more than likely give you a list of the infections on your computer. Click on 'Show Results' and then make sure all items are selected, and then select 'Remove All'.

Depending on how badly infected the system is and also the type of infection, Malwarebytes may or may not ask or prompt you to reboot your system.

I'd definitely suggest starting with this step and then let me know what the end result was. Malwarebytes, will in most cases clear out such infections.

Finally, now that you have Malwarebytes on the laptop, I'd suggest keeping it and running a full scan once a week.

If it is a redirect issue, which continues after you have run MalwareBytes, then you may also need to reset your hosts file if the problem continues.

You can download a fix from the following location: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

EDIT: If it says mbam.exe is infected, change the name of mbam.exe to treym.exe and then try the install again. This somtimes happens because certain viruses/ malware are trained to avoid letting any known removers from executing.

A Trojan virus is faulty computer program that can infect remote computers by changing the desktop or deleting important files. Generally called a Trojan Horse, it appears as a legitimate file or software from a trusted source, therefore tricking users into opening it or downloading it. Take action and protect your personal computer files by learning to delete this Trojan virus.

Download the free version of the Malwarebytes Anti-malware scanner. I had a very similar problem (some scam called Cyber Security) and it got rid of it. Here's a link: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Don't format. It's not a solution. Just download the IE8 setup from microsoft.com and reinstall it. And check if somehow norton is blocking IE from accessing internet. Or if you have a restore point created, you can restore your PC to that point.
