I'm using a laptop to access the internet but my computer's firewall settings have been changed after I installed the latest version of Norton. I need to access the internet on my computer in order to activate my copy. I am accessing the activation link via Internet Explorer, but I am getting a dead page ("Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage"), and when I click the button "Diagnose Connection Problems", I get a pop up stating:

"Windows cannot connect to the Internet using HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP. This is probably caused by firewall settings on this computer. Check the firewall settings for the HTTP port (80), HTTPS port (443) and FTP port (21)..."

It doesn't tell me where or how to check the firewall settings. *sigh*... I should atleast know something basic like this, I know... Do I check Internet options, or via Norton's firewall settings, or via Windows firewall settings? I'm confused.

Add Inernet Explorer to the exception list of your Firewall, XD.

Firstly, check if Windows Firewall is on by searching the start menu for 'windows firewall'. If u can find it and it is on, turn it off.

Secondly, try to find your Firewall in Norton. I'm not sure where because I don't use it as it is a very bad product.

Thirdly, check if your router or modem has firewall by searching your model on the internet. If it does have a firewall there is no need for a software firewall.

PS: If you want to secure your computer, I wouldn't recommend Norton. Let me guess, it was forced on you when you bought your computer in PC World or wherever, along with microsoft stuff too. It is a bad product because it is expensive, it uses up lots of RAM, making your computer slower, and it doesn't have a particularly good detection rate. There are many free alternatives. Check them out below. I have also left a link to a page about the best ways to secure your computer. The last link tells you all you need to know about firewalls.

You say you purchased Norton ... I will assume Internet Security or 360 as those have firewalls. Start with the Window Security Center (built into XP) and you should be able to open it in the system tray. Turn off the firewall from there and see if that corrects the issue (you may need to restart).

If that isn't it, disable Norton (again you may need to restart.

Issue is LIKELY that Norton and Microsoft aren't playing well in the sandbox together and need a timeout. They are both trying to control the same ports and that is causing your issue.

I hate to say this, but since you are a novice if those two ideas do not work (and we know Norton and MS aren't going to help you), you may need to go to a tech for help.

Good luck.

try to reset the internet settings, even thought it is saying firewall setting, if the internet set up is wrong it won't brows. or try to down load another browser. you should be abel to disable norton and see if norton is causing the problem. you can access firewall setting at the control panel but I don't think this is the problem.
