If you are running a good AV he protection will be in the background. See link for the best free AV.

You should have a good fully updated anti-virus. If you do not, then do not download the file. Even then it is possible if you do not read fully any messages that pop up when downloading, you could be telling your anti-virus not to check it if you click a wrong button.

Try any of these for real time protection

Another is to install an antimalware like MBAM for on demand scanning

Try to upload the file to virustotal.com and see the scan results

Any good anti-virus would serve the purpose...but make sure it is updated to the latest one.Download one by googling it or rather buy from a computer retailer (or online if u have a credit card) if u want full protection from internet bugs, etc.

There is a zillion antivirus programs out there, many of which are free. Perhaps the best I know of is Malwarebytes (https://www.malwarebytes.org/). Windows also offers Windows Defender. Regardless of what you install, run scans frequently.
