Question:
Can't access google and "lost" administrative rights- virus removal didnt help?

I have a Toshiba laptop with Vista. It is a piece of CRAP! Nothing but problems since day 1. Recently the problems have become pretty serious. I would have trouble getting to popular websites- facebook, twitter, google. The error message would be "server reset" in both firefox and IE. I used OpenDNS and that seemed to help for a little bit, but I still can't open google.

Last night, as I was downloading some spyware removal (Search and Destroy), I kept getting error messages that I couldn't perform certain actions because I wasn't the administrator of my network. I went to Users and I AM listed as the administrator, but for some reason my computer doesn't think so. I removed all items S&D found, including 2 trojans, but the problem still hasn't been reversed. I feel like the long I take, the worse this problem is going to get. Any suggestions? It has been about a week now.

Go into safe mode, tap F8 key on restart, use arrows and enter key, select safe mode with networking, get free version of this, update , do full scan. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

You may want to turn off your restore program first, when done , turn back on.

Open the Vista search box. Type "cmd" without the quotes. Above, right click Command Prompt and click "Run as Administrator". When the prompt comes up, hit continue.

Type "netsh winsock reset" without quotes and hit enter in the window that appears. When it's done, restart your PC.

Hope this helps!

EDIT: Edit your question to let me know if it works. Many viruses mess up the winsock, resulting in flaky/no network connectivity.

EDIT 2: These are the two default host file entries:

127.0.0.1 localhost

::1 localhost

If you removed the latter you should put it back.

run all scans in safemode...boot and at the same time tap the F8 key when the options screen appears choose safemode with networking then go to Safety.Live.com that is Microsoft's online virus scanner use the full service scan...if no problems are found then call your Internet Service Provider they may be a piece of crap

If you have a Windows XP setup disc I would go ahead and wipe Vista and install it!

Malware removal using Vista )~8

1.Go in Safe with networking mode by restarting your computer and repeatedly hitting F8 at startup and use the up/down arrows and enter to choose "Safe with networking mode". (I don't use Vista so do what ever to get in safe with networking mode?)

2.While in "Safe with networking mode" download Malwarebytes.

(Free) http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?tag=mncol

(Note)If you already have Malwarebytes installed and it won't run go in it's program file and rt click on the red mbam app and rename it mbam.bat then rt click and choose send to-> Desktop (create shortcut) now close out of everything and go to your desk top and use that app to launch M-Bam for now on.

3.Right click on the mbam setup app you downloaded and rename it xxxx then Dbl click on it and install and update it and run a full scan and delete/quarantine all entities it finds and restart if it asks? (Note) If it won't update use this link to download and install the latest rules: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam/database/mbam-rules.exe

4.Restart your computer normally (Not safe mode) and download, install, update, and run a full scan with Superantispyware, and

delete/quarantine all entities it finds and your done (^.^)
