Per the AVG Forum:

UPDATE .BIN error information... Aug 16th 2008

Posted by: rdsok - Moderator (IP Logged)

Currently the update for AVG Free v8 is corrupted... you will have to wait for AVG Technologies to address the issue with the update.

Reporting the issue again by other users here will not do any good util it is resolved.

The updates that your AVG currently have will still provide the protection it is setup to detect. In otherwords, just getting this update will not make your AVG Free ineffective and as soon as AVG Tech resolves the issue you will be able to update to the current virus definitions at that time.

So in short... please do not post to report the issue, its already known. Also please be patient until AVG Technologies can address the issue.

Also... for those user that did report the issue... thanks for the info.

==========

I hope this helps. Just wait until the next update and it should be taken care of.

Actually if you do the following it gets AVG running normally again without having to download anything...

1. Open AVG user interface

2. Select tools > update from directory

3. Navigate to the original install directory (typically c:/program files/AVG/AVG8) and hit OK

Same thing happened to me. It seems to be a problem with a recent download from AVG (August 16). Being the weekend no one from AVG free is around to respond. I would avoid using system restore, at this point. That would just generate new updates and probably throw your system back to where it is now, bin file missing. Limit browsing to known good web sites till the problem is fixed.

I think the AVG 8 Free Edition has a problem. I encountered the same problem a few hours ago, i tried to restore, no use. Then uninstalled and installed the program, still the same problem. I'm afraid we'll have to wait producers to solve it.

Someone else posted this...

IT WORKS!!!!

1) go to http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-updat...

2) make a directory on your desktop called AVG

3) download AVI: 270.6.4

4) download IAVI: / 1616

5) move the downloaded files to the directory you made called AVG

this is because the link for the official download update is broken, go at http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-update and download all the files to your computer, open AVG Anti-virus Free, click on Tools menu and then "update from directory...", point wherever you have saved the files that you dowloaded and it will update successfuly

yes Kahlil make a new folder called AVG. nice one intc_esc

I came across the same problem but got it sorted.

1 - Start up AVG,click Update Now.

2 - The list of updates is shown in Popup, click on the more information link.A list of updates will be shown.

3 - Click on and save all updates in a file except the last one - http://downloadfree.avg.com/update/u7iavi1616oo.bin - because this is causing the problem.

4 - Cancel the update and instead click on Tools > Update from Directory and go to the file where you saved the updates.Install these and AVG should be working properly again.

Hey, Don't worry about anything, I just have the same problem. All AVG users are. It's just kind of like a bug, or the update is missing some files. The best recommended thing I suggest you should do is nothing. You might mess up AVG, and waste your time. They will probably update this soon. Your Antivirus and Spyware protection and all those stuff will still be working properly, so you shouldn't worry. The bad thing is you will have the ! on your grayish AVG icon. If you do not trust me you can search 'bin file missing' on Yahoo! Answers. You can see a list of questions exactly like yours posted somewhere 6 hrs, 7 hrs, 5 hrs ago, or somewhere today. It is just a false update made by grisoft. Just be patient and it'll be updated, and everything will be working properly again. Good Luck! Kevin Don't worry!

3. Navigate to the original install directory (typically c:/program files/AVG/AVG8) and hit OK

DOES NOT WORK. It just gets the error message to go, but the problem is still there because when it auto updates, the same .bin problem comes up.

1) go to http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-updat...

2) make a directory on your desktop called AVG

3) download AVI: 270.6.4

4) download IAVI: / 1616

by intc originally will update your definitions to the latest. I am not sure about fixing the .bin problem, but your definition will be the latest, and the .bin message will not be there.

My AVG 8 looked fine until I just did a routine update prior to full scan.

Says .bin file missing! and at the top it says YOUR COMPUTER MAY NOT BE PROTECTED.

Same thought as others, wait a bit, and see if AVG addresses it, Could not find update elsewhere, but I updated yesterday no problem, so I should not be far out anyway. Although I did just remove SpywareBot, major security risk, found by Ad Aware.

As intc_escapee posted will solve the problem, I just performed this without any problems. There is no need to download another tool until AVG fixes the problem because the version of AVG that you currently are using will still work it just wont be current on the update if you do not use the suggested actions that intc_escapee posted.

What Snatch suggested doesn't really help at all, it just stops AVG from showing the error message. You're still as protected or unprotected as before. And as soon as the automatic update kicks in the error will reappear.

Do what others suggested:

Go to http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-update

Download both the AVI and IAVI

In AVG: Tools -> Update from directory

Choose the directory where you downloaded the files to

AVG will update correctly and you will be up-to-date. So this is a real solution to the problem not just hiding the error message.

I have the same problem. AVG looked fine and then the icon went dark. When I tried to update manually I received the missing .bin file notice. I then tried to update on my wife's computer and received the same message. Looks like it's AVG with the problem. Think it's time to wait and see.
2008-08-16 16:39:44 UTC
Don't panic...it's a problem at AVG's end. It will update as normal when AVG resolve the problem. Uninstalling/Reinstalling won't solve anything as you will still be trying to update the missing bin file from their site.

I also found the same problem, for who persons use the same AVG Anti-virus Free Edition 8.0 may try to shut down or restart your PC just a moment and later look at the errror message : A .bin file is missing will show out or not ! Anyone got solution.

I have the same problem. So I deinstalled the AVG 8.0 free version and installed it again. I restored the system (Vista) to 5 days ago when it all worked well. No effect. Still the same warning: bin.file is missing - update failed. So I hope that with a new update the problem will be solved.
2008-08-17 01:04:42 UTC
This is an old problem. It occurs when you have deleted a file somewhere. Uninstalling the old version does not clear out all related files so installing new version does not install all required files as it recognises the files left on the computer. You have to go in and manually delete these old files. The AVG site used to have a method of how to do this but at present cant find it

Go to grisoft.com and click on the support tab then the download tab in the new screen. Manually download AVI: 270.6.4 and IAVI: / 1616. Open up AVG and click tools and choose update from directory... Select the folder where you saved the .bin files you just downloaded and click ok. It should update with those and then you can do automatic update for the rest.

I had the same problem but got it to work.

Step one: fire up AVG and click on Update Now.

Step two: when the list of updates is shown in the popup window, click on the link to tell you more. This will take you to a list of the updates you're trying to, well, update.

Step three: click on and save to your computer the all updates except the last one - http://downloadfree.avg.com/update/u7iavi1616oo.bin - because it isn't there.

Step four: cancel the update.

Step five: instead click on Tools->Update from Directory and browse to wherever you downloaded the file.

It should work from there.

I noticed, of course, that I wasn't the only one with the issue...so that's good, because now we all know that we don't have a virus.

I found information from AVG's website. It's located in the "Free Forum" page:

http://freeforum.avg.com/read.php?12,142806,backpage=,sv=

Copy & Paste this link in your browser & you'll see that everything's ok. AVG is working on the problem, and we're ALL still protected.

No need to perform a system restore. We just need to be patient.

Listen up guys. This is a global problem. Nothing like a Free antivirus program, so don't expect technical support. These guys at AVG are still asleep and haven't woken up to the new week this Sunday morning. They will surely discover their very serious problem and fix it. Relax and have a cup of coffee.

Hello, its bcoz avg's server cannot automatically download the bin files. to download it manually, go to http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-update and download all 4 files abt 52MB and put them in a file named avg. then open the avg program and go to tools menu and select update from directory, then browse for your file, update and the next updates will be fine.

Try this

1. Right click on the AVG icon in tray (bottom right of your screen) its probably showing an exclamation mark!

2. click on update

3. Done!

4. Go pour yourself a drink and relax. :-)

u guys just have to "update from directory" to solve this problem. it works!
2008-08-17 04:25:29 UTC
They have now fixed the problem.

If you have to download the installer, don't use their server, as it is swamped. Use their link to Download.com instead.
