You should get a Internet Security Suite. It will cover all your needs. Anti-virus, anti-spyware, and a firewall. Kaspersky Internet Security or Norton Internet Security are good picks. If you go with Kaspersky you should also get WOT (web of Trust) That way you will know if a site has a bad rating and can stay off of it. Norton has a web rating tool. You should understand this, many users who post here everyday have good security programs and still get infected. You need to take some care when on the internet. Don't click on pop ups, don't keep going to bad web sites, Only download from trusted sites. Don't and this is a big Don't. Don't use P2P file sharing. What many users don't understand is, it's not what security software you have, it's about using your head. If you really want to keep your computer malware free, spend 20 minutes learning how malware gets on a computer. Then you will know how to protect your computer.

This year rated 11 commercial security suites, including high-profile products like Norton Internet Security (Symantec), Internet Security (McAfee) and Smart Security (Eset LLC). Each package was tested against both actual exploits active on the Web as well as others that were modified to represent "threats too new to have been discovered," said the Consumer Reports magazine.

Eset's Smart Security led the list with a score of 72 out of a possible 100, with McAfee's and Symantec's suites in second and tied for third, respectively, with 71 and 70 points.

But Consumer Reports's top honors went to a free three-pack of Avira's AntiVir antivirus program, Microsoft's Windows Defender antispyware software and the Spamfighter antispam program.

"These free programs offer the best combination of performance and price. All are recommended," said Consumer Reports in giving the trio its "CR Best Buy" for the category. "[They] could be combined to create a makeshift suite."

McAfee does very well. There are some that do better. A good package is the Trend Micro Antispyware/Antivirus and then add a better firewall like genuine freeware Comodo which has consistently been rated as about best. The Trend Micro suite (full suite is all three - antivirus, antispyware, personal firewall) firewall could be better. Trend Micro still allows just the antivirus/antispyware package. They are very good. Used them for years.

The antispyware Webroot Spysweeper (industry leader) has been joined with Sophos AV (antivirus). UK based Sophos has won an unprecedented 40 plus VB100 Awards as did Symantec Norton. That is the top coveted award for perfect scores for antivirus and legal right to display their logo on product websites. Sophos is an corporate enterprise level that made the only client side version with Webroot. The Webroot suite has a weak firewall which is free as stand alone as well. Again you can add Comod oFirewall here http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Either of these two packages are like tops in the world with prevention, detection, and removals.

McAfee is a great software, as I have it now, but out of every software I believe Sophos is the absolute best. Unlike McAfee, it updates without icons popping up, it only scans when you want it to, it's very simple to use, and it is very reliable most of the time. It also does not need a subscribtion. Whatever you do though, never get Norton. It will destroy your computer, as it did mine twice. Good luck!

edit: I know many of the other people are pretty convincing over their anti-virus software, but I can assure you that Sophos is the best. One way to show it is that many schools, colleges, and businesses use this because of its reliability. Second, the software has won many awards. Lastly, although the price tag may be higher then most and it has a business aim to it , it has great reliability without having to slow your computer down. Here is the web link for any questions on it.

Good luck and feel free to ask me about any more questions!
