Why has this has been going on for over 11 years Why are people still using windows XP Here is a statement dated the 1st July 2010
Microsoft said it had seen more than 10,000 machines hit by the attack so far, that it has not found a fix for.

If people can't afford to buy windows 7 then they should look for a Free secure alternative operating system. There are many BSD Linux and Unix operating systems available from http://distrowatch.com

XP security alert check it out

Hi Carling

you have been allowed this question then this time, I have watched and recently all your questions have been deleted which for the life of me seemed totally unjust.

Back to your topic Xp has proved that Microsoft could produce something which most are comfortable with.

and so many simply don't want to change along with the inflated prices.

the vista was a big failure as most people who tried found, so when windows 7 appeared they where even more sceptical about trying that.

It will take the total demise of Microsoft before we see a change to other operating systems, people have a problem with admitting that they have been had, especially if it cost them money.

they will put up with all the problems, just last night we had a conversation in a new small group about using linux and they are very reluctant to give it a try or they have an old version that took a lot of fixing after loading to get looking something like.

they seem to have the will to live as far as i can see, i must admit that this old suse 10.3 is what i am still using appears more user friendly than the 11.1 or 11.2 and now we will get 11.3 in less than 2 weeks.

all improvements but while bill's boys are still producing the same old rubbish they will keep buying it.

this friend has a problem with an XP in loading it but when i suggested i did it for him he got very defencive. There are issues around microsoft and hard drives which make me think that unless its a brand new drive some of Microsoft software simple will not work with it...and the ever present issues over data cables having high resistance and not reading all the data persists.

the a change to the free computer systems will be a long time coming as the Masses like being taken for a mug.

Sorry to nit pick Carling, but UNIX is a Proprietary system, BSD, GNU/Linux and some others are called *nix systems.

I went ut the Windows in 2001, that was after testing and using many Free \as in Freedom/ systems, one of my faves is still BeOS, now Haiku.

I seem to always fall back onto Debian GNU/Linux, and FreeBSD.

People buy that stuff because it is ON SALE! It is a sad comment on a society when ON SALE! is considered a better widget than something that is and has been Free since the 1990s, and before.

A person can still order a box sans any Pre-Istalled OS and save alot of monies and time configuring Firewalls, Anti-Phishing, Anti-Malware and backup software that is and has always been free, @echo . But we live in a point and click world, then came Mint, BeOS, and now Ubuntu, and 120+ other Debian Based derivatives.

People are fickle and follow trends rather than making informed decisions. That is just the way it is.

The best security is the last backup that the Admin made.

Well it depends on the situation. Some people like using Windows XP. I get viruses all the time but I fix the problem. Some people just don't want to download a new version and reinstall everything.

It's the usual Microsoft Parade.

Microsoft Releases Advisory On XP Help Vulnerability

Quick fix is here> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2219475

I don't even venture onto the 'Net with XP anymore...it's a minefield.

Strictly Linux for that.

Mate, the exploit was only revealed 10th June this year, involves the remote part of the Help and Support which should be turned off anyway (as Microsoft are recommending) and if you update and use adequate security (Carole Theirault, Sophos), and use software that watches out as you surf (Mr Ferguson, Trend Micro), and some plain common sense and basic knowledge, there's no real drama.

These people getting hit are usually failing in one of those regards, often because they are uninformed. Uninformed people don't switch to free software, even if it's more secure, because they don't know about it and don't know enough even if they do.

Instead of scare-mongering, join those of us who are trying to give real information and education to users with less knowledge than our own.
