Question:
Question about Antivirus for Mac ?
2011-06-04 04:31:33 UTC
As far as I knew mac osx were immune to viruses, but with all this talk of security breaches, and fake antivirus software, I've become concerned. Is it worth purchasing an antiviral software for Mac? If yes, what is the best antivirus software, norton, kapersky or other?
Thanks

There are still no Mac viruses. The Windows users for the most part confuse malware with a virus. There hasn't been a MacOS X virus released since 2006, that's 5 years. There are now a few Mac trojans which require the user to be duped into downloading and installing malware. It's the same scare tactic that Windows users have had for years. A message (fake) popups up on your Mac telling you you have 48 viruses on your Mac and advises you to download Mac Defender (or any one of a 1/2 dozen names) to remove them. You have to agree to download and install it. And then you are bribed to pay them with your credit card info to remove the porn they splash on your Mac. Just turn on the popup ad blocker in Safari, and turn off the "Open safe files after downloading" in Safari preferences. Apple is also updating their software every day or so to warn you if you try to install a trojan. Just be smart enough to only download software from legal and approved sites.

As to security breaches, just have a password on your Mac and make sure the firewall is on.

I did tech support for a school district for 10 years, never had a Mac with a virus.

Yes. Technology is increasing and more and more people are switching to Apple Mac computers, meaning that they are now a bigger target for malware developers. The best antivirus I have come across for Mac is PC Tools iAntiVirus, which has high malware detection rates and best of all is FREE.

they were NEVER immune and if you have never had security you risked your very expensive computers ability to even boot get off your mac and don't go on until you get apple care or whatever real virus protections for mac are available.
