is the folder's parent a read-only? also, go to the properties, go to Security and see if it has inherited properties. that chould cause it to have readonly property.

Click Property ->Security ->the user name -> Advanced and check if it has the inherit from parent checked. if it is, uncheck it and set your permissions and such.

Are you messing with a system file? Read only protects you from damaging critical files.

The file or folder may be inheriting its attributes from the parent folder... try checking the attributes of the parent folder(s) and set the readonly attribute to false there.

Also make sure you aren't trying to set the readonly attribute on a file or folder on a CD (which is always set to read-only).

What kind of document is it? If its a word doc then the person who created placed protection on it, if you created it then its open somewhere on your system. Only one copy of a file can be opened at anytime with office. If the file you are speaking about is something else remember that some files are created in read only so that nothing is changed for the reason that if you do the program may not work.
